Search for how long GTA 6 takes to finish and you will be told 35 hours, 45 hours, 50 hours, 62 hours, 75 hours and 100 hours — usually in a headline, usually without a source. Every one of those numbers traces back to somebody who is not Rockstar, and two of them trace back to information gathered in 2022.

Unconfirmed: playtime, mission count, map size, install size and frame rate target. Rockstar Games has never published any of those figures for Grand Theft Auto VI.

What follows is everything being claimed, sorted by how much weight sits behind each claim. Current as of August 23, 2026, four days before the first official gameplay showing.

How to read this page

Every claim below carries one of five labels.

LabelWhat sits behind it
OfficialRockstar, Take-Two or Sony said it: trailer, press release, store listing or financial filing
ReportedA journalist with a verifiable record published it with sourcing: Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Insider Gaming, Digital Foundry
LeakA leaker claimed it and Rockstar has not confirmed it
CommunityFans worked it out from footage: interpretation, not information
DebunkedIt contradicts something verifiable, or the person who said it withdrew it

Playtime

No official figure exists. For reference, GTA V is generally cited at roughly 31 hours for the main story and 80-plus for full completion; Red Dead Redemption 2 runs about 50 to 60 hours of story. Dexerto has published a breakdown of the circulating estimates.

EstimateSourceLabel
35–40 hours, “shorter than RDR2”LegacyKillaHDLeak
45–50 hoursAggregated anonymous reports, no primary sourceLeak
60+ hoursAnonymous source, March 2026Leak
62 hours plus 200+ side missionsSource described as having a moderate but real Rockstar record, March 2026Leak
75 hours across five chaptersFan arithmetic from GameRoll’s five-chapter claimCommunity
100+ hoursViral headlineDebunked as a story-length figure

Important: the 35–40 hour claim carries a detail that most outlets repeating it leave out. LegacyKillaHD has said he received that number in 2022, which means it describes a build from four years ago.

Pre-release playtime estimates leak before almost every large open-world game and rarely survive contact with the finished product. Cyberpunk 2077 was widely reported at 60-plus hours and shipped at roughly 25 for a focused run.

Mission count

The only structural claim about the story comes from the leaker GameRoll_. In June 2025 he said the story runs across five chapters, one fewer than Red Dead Redemption 2, and that both trailers drew only from the first three.

Unconfirmed: the mission count. Press estimates of 70–90, 90–100 and 90–120 missions are extrapolation from GTA V, not leaked information.

GameMain story missions
San Andreas~100
GTA IV~88
GTA V~69 (up to 79 counting Strangers and Freaks)
Red Dead Redemption 2~110 across six chapters plus epilogue
GTA VIUnknown; five chapters claimed

The map, and the interiors number that isn’t real

Confirmed: six regions are named on Rockstar’s own site: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park.

We have broken every one of them down through the official frames in the locations guide and pinned them on the interactive map.

Unconfirmed: the five county names circulating since August 18. Lummox, Kelly, Leonard, Vice-Dale and Mariana come from the leaked map image, not from Rockstar.

Vice-Dale had appeared in an official trailer. Lummox and Mariana had never been seen anywhere before, and outlets presenting these counties as the game’s regions are reporting a contested leak as fact; the timeline of how the leak unfolded is covered separately.

On size, Rockstar has published nothing. What fills the gap is community arithmetic:

  • mapping projects estimated roughly 2 to 2.5 times the area of GTA V;
  • aggregator sites hardened that into “118–132 square miles” and repeat it as though it were measured;
  • after the August map leak, several of those same mappers revised downward to around 1.5 to 1.7 times, because a large share of the visible area turned out to be water.

Then there is the interiors figure, the most distorted number in the entire subject.

Unconfirmed: “Rockstar confirmed 700+ interiors.” The original claim is a line from GameRoll_ in a Discord message in June 2025, and what he wrote was that there are 700-plus stores you can enter and rob, as The Game Post reported at the time. Stores, not interiors, and a leaker, not Rockstar.

The only interiors number with verifiable provenance is 157, pulled from debug code inside the confirmed September 2022 breach. GTA V shipped with roughly 40.

Story and characters

Rockstar published full biographies for both protagonists after Trailer 2, so this section has more solid ground than most. All eight dossiers, with the theories attached to them, sit in a separate breakdown.

Jason Duval grew up around grifters and hustlers, joined the army to escape a troubled adolescence, and now works for local drug runners. Lucia Caminos has just left Leonida Penitentiary; her father taught her to fight from the time she could walk, fighting for her family is what put her inside, and luck is what got her out.

The supporting cast Rockstar has named:

  • Cal Hampton, Jason’s paranoid best friend who listens in on coast guard radio;
  • Boobie Ike, who came off the streets to own a strip club, property and a recording studio;
  • Dre’Quan Priest, an up-and-coming music producer;
  • Real Dimez, the hip-hop duo of Bae-Luxe and Roxy;
  • Raul Bautista, a veteran bank robber recruiting new people;
  • Brian Heder, the ageing smuggler whose house Jason lives in.

Pre-order materials added Wyman, a collector and fixer who commissions classic car restorations, the PTT Youngin$ gang in Southside Vice City, and a reference to the Vercetti Estate as a location.

Important: the Bonnie and Clyde comparison, which appears in roughly every article written about the game, has never come from Rockstar. It originated in press coverage after Trailer 2.

Obbe Vermeij, a former Rockstar North technical director, made the comparison publicly. He left the company in 2009 and has no involvement with GTA VI.

The unverified story claims all trace to GameRoll_: five chapters, a relationship system between Jason and Lucia affecting story branches and endings, and an assertion in June 2025 that chapters four and five were unfinished with chapter five in development hell and being rewritten. He attached his own caveat, which is more honest than most of the coverage built on it: his source “claims to be a friend of a Rockstar developer,” and he has no proof.

Multiple endings, Jason and Lucia killing each other, a third protagonist named Malik Carter: all community theory. The third protagonist claim surfaced from what was described as QA server data and has been neither proved nor disproved. Rockstar has never mentioned the name.

Mechanics that are actually confirmed

This is the part most rumour round-ups skip, because confirmed material is less exciting than leaked material. It also happens to be the part you can rely on.

Confirmed: everything in the list below comes from Rockstar’s own pre-order copy published June 24–25, 2026. The bonus frames get their own breakdown of the editions.

  • personal garages across Leonida, containing a weapons locker for building loadouts and a stash box for stolen goods;
  • a fence who buys most stolen items at a discount; carrying hot goods draws police attention, which is why the stash box exists;
  • mod shops with performance and cosmetic work, including interiors, wheels, donk styling, spoilers and custom liveries;
  • One-Eyed Willie’s at Lake Leonida, specialising in off-road and hand-painted work;
  • weapon customisation with grips, engravings and sights, and Ammu-Nation returning;
  • character customisation covering clothing, accessories, hair, Jason’s beard, Lucia’s makeup and nails, and tattoos across arms, legs and back;
  • a Classic Car Collection activity built around finding abandoned vehicles for Wyman;
  • gang raids, including robbing the PTT Youngin$ illegal goods store;
  • Jason’s coastal safehouse with parking for several vehicles.

GamesRadar+ worked through the same customisation details across 63 official screenshots.

Unconfirmed: property and business ownership. The safehouse and garages are the extent of it, and every “build a real estate empire in GTA 6” article is extrapolating from Vice City and GTA V.

Mechanics claimed from the August leak

Unconfirmed: all of the following. The clips it was read out of are placed in a 2024 build or older by Insider Gaming metadata analysis.

Each mechanic gets a full treatment in a separate breakdown; the short version is here:

  • fuel and vehicle condition gauges, with gas stations offering both refuelling and repair for money;
  • a six-star wanted level with icons underneath apparently tracking what police know about your clothing, face and vehicle;
  • a karma or honor indicator that turns into a horned emoji with a minus after violence;
  • a stamina bar in melee;
  • loadout and storage prompts at a car boot, implying you no longer carry an entire arsenal;
  • register-by-register robbery totals rather than a single fixed payout;
  • a Focus attribute that rose two percent after a basketball shot;
  • Clone Key and Smash Window options for stealing cars;
  • Zombix pills with diminishing returns;
  • a Wasted screen and strip clubs returning.

GameRoll_ separately claimed a character switch wheel allowing control of both protagonists, functional shopping malls, and that dual-wielding, house robberies, prone movement and a dynamic cover system were all cut.

Important: prone movement and body carrying were present in the confirmed 2022 leak. That is a useful demonstration of how much old leaked footage shows features that never shipped.

Technical claims

Confirmed: a joint PlayStation Blog post says GTA VI uses the PS5 SSD for near-instant loading. No figures in seconds were given.

Confirmed: the game is tagged PS5 Pro Enhanced in the PlayStation Store. Rockstar has not said what the tag delivers.

Unconfirmed: frame rate. It has not been announced for any platform.

Digital Foundry reads it this way: a 30fps fidelity mode is close to guaranteed and 60fps is unlikely even on PS5 Pro, because the bottleneck is CPU rather than GPU. They consider a 40fps mode for 120Hz displays the more realistic compromise. Both trailers were rendered at 30fps with heavy ray-traced global illumination. Push Square reached the same conclusion about 60fps on every PS5 model.

Install size has no official figure. The size fields on both the PlayStation and Xbox store listings are empty, which is standard Rockstar practice: they typically publish it four to eight weeks before release, so expect it in September or October. Press estimates run 150–200 GB plus a day-one patch, and the widely circulated “180 GB” is a blogger’s estimate rather than store data. For reference, RDR2 is about 150 GB and GTA V about 95 GB.

Unconfirmed: a PC version. It has not been announced, and two former Rockstar developers have independently said it is a long way off.

Online

Unconfirmed: an online mode for GTA VI. Rockstar has announced no name, no format and no date, and the pre-order press release describes a single-player experience.

The strongest evidence that one exists at all comes from an unlikely place. Employment tribunal documents from Rockstar North, reviewed by People Make Games and worked through by GamesRadar+, quote a dismissed employee writing about a session that “was 32 players, don’t see what was difficult about that.” Rockstar’s own response stated concern that employees had shared details of an “announced online service.” Current GTA Online supports 30 players plus two spectators.

Schreier’s reporting after interviewing Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick is that the company discusses GTA VI purely as a single-player campaign and has no near-term plan to talk about what the new GTA Online looks like. Existing GTA Online continues to be supported, and digital pre-orders include a month of GTA+ for it, which is itself a strong hint that nothing new arrives on day one.

Which sources are worth your attention

The single most useful thing in this article is probably this section, because most GTA VI misinformation comes from treating all sources as equivalent.

Jason Schreier at Bloomberg is the strongest source in the subject, but his specialism is business and development process rather than feature lists. He reported that staff were not told about the delay in advance, that as of January 2026 the game was not content complete, and in July 2026 that he was roughly 90 percent confident the November date holds.

Important: that last figure is the origin of one of the most-repeated distortions in the topic, the headlines claiming “Schreier says GTA 6 is 90 percent complete.” He said 90 percent confident in the date, which is a different statement entirely. GTA BOOM took the swap apart.

Tom Henderson at Insider Gaming is an established industry source and did the metadata analysis dating the leaked build. His outlet also retracted its own story about the leaker threatening to release a full PC build after discovering it rested on a fabricated image from an impersonator, which is what responsible sourcing looks like.

Tez2 is a datamining veteran whose value is verifiable artefacts rather than second-hand accounts. In September 2025 he found eight domains registered on Take-Two nameservers, including what-up.app, an app already visible on Lucia’s phone in the confirmed 2022 leak. Take-Two pulled them from its nameservers shortly after he published.

GameRoll_ is the origin of most GTA VI “facts” you see in listicles. His entire reputation rests on correctly leaking the surnames Duval and Caminos before Rockstar announced them. That is a real hit, but it does not validate everything he has said since, and each claim needs assessing on its own.

Digital Foundry has no inside access at all. Their value is engineering analysis of public footage.

What has already been proven wrong

All of the following was presented as confirmed at some point and did not survive:

  • a 1980s setting, a South American region and Cuba on the map;
  • protagonists named Walther Wallace, Thomas Branigan or Marcus Burke;
  • Jason and Lucia being siblings, or one of them being an undercover officer;
  • multiple historical time periods and native VR support;
  • dynamic hurricanes, a branching narrative, an evolving map and cross-play, none of which has been announced;
  • a $150 standard edition, which arrived at $79.99;
  • a PC version at launch, which makes any PC pre-order or beta signup a scam by definition.

Three specific fakes are worth knowing by name:

  1. The “bridge leak” of March 2026, a blurry 40-second clip supposedly from a 2020 build, which its own creator admitted fabricating.
  2. The viral Netflix screenshot claiming the Extended Look runs 66-plus minutes across three episodes, which used the wrong interface layout.
  3. A wave of AI-generated clips: Lucia at a theme park, Jason playing basketball. They are mixed into search results alongside genuine material, with some YouTube channels inserting AI footage deliberately to avoid copyright strikes.

Kotaku has written separately on how hard genuine leaks have become to tell apart from AI fakes.

There is also an active scam layer: sites charging around $250 in cryptocurrency for early access that does not exist, and SEO spam pages hosted on hacked university subdomains.

Release date, and whether it holds

Two official delays have happened, and the release window has moved four times:

  • December 2023: Trailer 1 shows a 2025 window;
  • May 2024: the window narrows to autumn 2025;
  • May 2025: a firm date of May 26, 2026 is set;
  • November 2025: the date moves to November 19, 2026.

The financial argument against a third delay is substantial: Take-Two has guided to $8.0–8.2 billion in net bookings for FY2027 on the basis of a November release and put that in its filings. Guidance disclosed to investors and regulators carries legal weight.

The argument for caution is Schreier’s, and it is not nothing. He reported the game was not content complete as of January 2026, and has said he would not be shocked by an autumn slip in the RDR2 pattern. GameRoll_’s claim about unfinished final chapters points the same direction, from a much weaker source.

Important: neither the leaks nor the legal fallout appear to have changed anything. Rockstar is not moving the August 27 showing and has not touched the November date.

Four days out

An Extended Look premieres on Netflix at 3 p.m. ET on August 27 and reaches Rockstar’s YouTube channel and the official site at 9 p.m. ET; times for every zone are here.

The items on this page most likely to be settled that day are the ones visible on a HUD:

  • the wanted level star count;
  • whether a fuel gauge exists;
  • whether character stats appear on screen;
  • how vehicle customisation is presented.

Playtime, mission count and install size will almost certainly not be addressed, because Rockstar has never used a gameplay showing to announce those. We will update this page after the showing, with the date of each change marked.
